KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS

What's a keyboard shortcut and why do you want to know some of them?

A keyboard shortcut allows you to complete certain commands without the aid of a mouse, and in lieu of using some drop-down menu features. Instead of pointing and clicking, you use the keyboard and "combination keys" such as the "control" key and the "C" key. (This shortcut will copy any highlighted text to the clipboard so you can paste it in another location.)

This can be a time saver when you wish to keep your hands on the home keys of the keyboard. However, there are some more important uses. There are times when you may be in a program or viewing a window that doesn't have/allow a copy ot paste function from the drop-down menu. That's when to pull out your trusty shortcut keys and put them to work for you. (Note: Some programs refer to these as hot keys, and some programs allow you to designate available combinations to run a "macro".)

(The "Control" or "ALT" key is depressed and then the combination key is depressed.) [Ctrl=Control]

Some short cut keys:

Ctrl + C ...copy
Ctrl + V ...paste
Ctrl + X ...cut & copy
Ctrl + P ...typically, print
Ctrl + A ...select all (for highlight entire text without the aid of a mouse)

For more Shortcut Keys, see the Microsoft web site.

(I have used these keys in combination to salvage data, when my mouse has gone dead, just prior to a crash.)
